What is Remote Authentication?

By default, ScreenSteps Live allows you to manage access to your content by means of users and groups that you create in your ScreenSteps Live account. Remote Authentication allows you to incorporate a 3rd party user management system with your ScreenSteps Live account so that you do not have to manage users in two separate places. Basically you have full control over the user authentication process.

How Does It Work?

How_does_it_work_display

When a user requests protected content on your ScreenSteps Live site, ScreenSteps Live normally displays a login screen. But with remote authentication enabled you take control of user authentication. Here is how a request for protected content works:

• The user requests (1) protected content on your ScreenSteps Live account (2).

• With remote authentication enabled ScreenSteps Live redirects the user to a url that you specify (3).

• This url contains a login screen where the user enters a username and password (4).

• When the user successfully enters a valid username and password your system tells ScreenSteps Live to let the user in (5) at which point ScreenSteps Live grants access to the protected content (6).

Two Types of Remote Authentication

ScreenSteps Live offers two options for remote authentication:

  • SAML (Security Assertion Markup Language)
  • ScreenSteps Live Remote Authentication

If you are using an identity provider that offers SAML support then you should use SAML. If you need to integrate ScreenSteps Live with a service that does not offer SAML support then you should use ScreenSteps Live Remote Authentication.
