Creating Redirects
One of the real benefits of ScreenSteps Live is the ability to grow your content as you need to over time without having to do a lot of planning up front. Sometimes, as you your content increases you may want to reorganize your ScreenSteps Live site. You may want to split a manual in two or move a lessons from one manual to another.
This can create a problem if you already have links pointing to lessons on your ScreenSteps Live site. If you move the lesson to a different manual then those links will no longer work. You can use Redirects to solve this problem. With a redirect you can tell links that are coming to a specific URL to be redirected to a new url.
Redirect Settings Explanation
1. Select the type of redirect you want to create. In most cases this should be set to Manual. Bucket redirects are only for older accounts. If you don't know what a Bucket is then don't worry about it.
2. The id or permalink of your manual
This is the number or word that comes right after /manuals or /buckets in your url.
Examples:
• http://help.mysite.com/manuals/my-manual - use my-manual
• http://help.mysite.com/buckets/34 - use 34
3. Chapter ID (optional): only fill in this field if you are setting up a redirect for a url that points to a chapter
4. Lesson ID (optional): only fill in this field if you are setting up a redirect for a url that points to a lesson
5. URL: the page you want visitors to be redirected to when the redirect is triggered
Example 1: Redirecting a lesson in a manual
In this example the original url was http://help.mysite.com/manuals/my-manual/lessons/44.
When the visitor enters that url they would be redirected to http://help.mysite.com/manuals/another-manual/lessons/44.
Example 2: Redirecting a chapter
In this example the original url was http://help.mysite.com/manuals/452/chapters/553.
When the visitor enters that url they would be redirected to http://help.mysite.com/manuals/452/chapers/678
