How to copy a shortened url to the clipboard using bit.ly

This lesson will show you how to copy a shortened version of a manual, chapter or lesson URL to the clipboard.

Create a Template

If you are not familiar with how to create a template please see this lesson.

Name the Template

Name_the_template_display

Name the new template you have created. I have named mine Shortened.

Enter Template Code

Enter_template_code_display

To insert a shortened version of a URL you use the %SHORT_URL% template variable. Any instance of this variable will be replaced with a URL that has been shortened using the bit.ly service.

Here is the text used in the example:

%TITLE%: %SHORT_URL%

Configure bit.ly Login and API Key

Configure_bit.ly_login_and_api_key_display

In order to shorten urls you need to enter your bit.ly login and API key. Switch to the URL Shorteners tab (1). Here you can enter your information (2).

If you don't know your API key click on the link provided and you will be taken to the bit.ly webpage that displays your API key (3).

Test

As you can see, a short URL was copied to the clipboard instead of the full lesson URL.
